My hopes for a Greer or Allingham break-through

I was just looking back at this blog because I did get an encouraging comment the other day. I notice that I had not post here in almost a year. And that is because there has not been much to say.

I’ve pretty much exhausted what I know about the Allingham family of Glencar and the Greer who married one of the children in the story of Matthew GREER and Ruth ALLINGHAM and the linked posts. I’ve shared the occasional tidbit of other Glencar info I run across.

Strictly speaking the children and grandchildren Matthew and Ruth don’t really belong in a Glencar blog. The children were born in Sligo and emigrated to New York. So I put what I learn about the children and grandchildren of the marriage in my main blog – http://www.jackreidy.com/blog/, also called the RetiredGuy for lack of a better name.

Yes, there is occasional rant on other subjects but it is mostly about genealogy resources that I’ve found useful or various aspect of my family search.

A big part of my genealogy is hunting down various collateral relatives in the hopes that maybe I’ll run across someone who knows more than I do about the families of interest to me. Of course, this is where I hope for a Greer or Allingham break-through.

Matthew GREER and Ruth ALLINGHAM

I’ve already mentioned these folks in passing in my post on Thomas Allingham of Glencar but I think I should go into a bit more detail.

Matthew GREER was from Scotland, maybe. I don’t know where. (That’s as specific as it gets on his son’s death certificate (William GREER). William’s mother was Jane BURKARD , also of Scotland, maybe. I’m not sure where these couple is from. All we really have to go on is the death certificate of William Greer. so it seems to be Scotland but could be Ireland. It could be they moved back and forth.

On 23 Feb 1854, he married Ruth ALLINGHAM of Glencar in the parish church of Glenlough, Co Leitrim. He is listed as a shoemaker on the certificate. His residence is Sligo. He is a widower. His father is listed as Archibald GREER. . Ruth’s father is Thomas ALLINGHAM, a farmer in Glencar.

I have information on several births between 1862 and 1874 (Elizabeth, Letitia, Henrietta, Sarah, Rebecca, Ruth and another Matthew). There may have been other children born in the first 8 years of this marriage.

Matthew GREER’s occupation is listed as letter carrier on the birth certificates. His residence is Ballinode townland in Sligo. he seems to have been an educated man, as he signed his name instead of making his mark. In several of the records his residence in Ballinode Cottage and in others he lives on The Mall in Sligo. He died in 1875, married to Ruth. Ruth died later in the United States.

Ruth’s daughter, m Elizabeth GREER emigrated from Sligo to NY City in the US in 1878. In the 1880 census, she is listed as a servant at the Presbyterian Home for Aged Women on E 73rd St. In 1887 she married John Tracey, an Irish emigrant from Dublin. In 1937, Lizzie Tracey died in Valley Stream NY.

Children and grandchildren of Glencar

I started this blog to discuss children of Glencar – my ancestors and others born in Glencar or the area near Glencar.

And that is still my intent. But since my interest is in genealogy I also want to discuss descendants of the children of Glencar and, of course, other branches of my family.

So I will have those discussions on my main blog RetiredGuy at http://www.jackreidy.com/blog/ . I discuss genealogy, books, current events and pretty much anything that strikes my interest at RetiredGuy.

The other mystery marriage: James Allingham and Mary Jane Siberry

I have previous written about an odd coincidence that was a bit of a mystery for a while, as the “Leitrim mystery in which 2 Allinghams marry Mary Jane Siberry”.

And then I wrote about one, so here is the other marriage. I’m working up a few details on each marriage as I think one or both grooms may be a nephew of the Thomas Allingham of Glencar that I wrote about earlier.

This is more or less a first draft on this family. Most of the information is as listed in an index of marriages and births on familysearch.org so it is quite possible some information was missed. The note on Thomas John Allingham (below) is based on multiple sources and is my best guess as of now. I hope more information will allow me to firm-up this conclusion (or it may prove me wrong).

JAMES ALLINGHAM married Mary Jane Siberry, daughter of Thomas Siberry on 09 Jan 1862 in Killasnet, Leitrim, James ALLINGHAM and Mary Jane Siberry had the following children:

i. JANE ALLINGHAM was born on 17 Nov 1864 in Leitrim, Ireland.

ii. ELIZABETH ALLINGHAM was born on 12 Dec 1866 in Lurganboy, Leitrim, Ireland.

iii. JOHN ALLINGHAM was born on 13 Aug 1868 in Glencar, Co Leitrim, Ireland (see note)

iv. JAMES ALLINGHAM was born on 20 Apr 1870 in Leitrim, Ireland.

v. WILLIAM ALLINGHAM was born on 19 Feb 1872 in Leitrim, Ireland.

vi. DAVID ALLINGHAM was born on 01 Jan 1874 in Lurganboy, Leitrim, Ireland

vii. CATHERINE ALLINGHAM was born on 04 Mar 1875 in Leitrim, Ireland.

viii. ALICE EMILY ALLINGHAM was born on 15 Jul 1877 in Killasnet, Leitrim, Ireland.

Note: I believe that the John Allingham listed above is actually the THOMAS JOHN ALLINGHAM who emigrated to the US giving his birth as 25 Aug 1868 in Glencar, Co Leitrim, Ireland on his Naturalization Papers. He married MARION SCOTT BROWN. She was born about 1878 in Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada. Their children were ROBERT SIBERRY ALLINGHAM and MERRILLE EVELYN ALLINGHAM .
